【摘要】:Thistechniquemodifiesthesample,inthattheglassfragmentmustbecrushed,ifitistoolarge,andimmersedinoilfortheanalysis.Somesamplehandling,however,wouldenabletheanalysttorecoverthesampleinthecrushedform,ifnecessary.Thistestmethodisusefulforaccuratemeasurementofx03B7;Dtfromawidevarietyofglasssamples,wheremostglassesofinteresthavex03B7;Dtintherangebetween1.48x2013;1.55inx03B7;Dtunits.Theobjectivenatureofthematchpointdeterminationallowsforabetterstandardizationbetweenlaboratories,andtherefore,allowsfortheinterchangeofdatabasesbetweenlaboratories.Itshouldberecognizedthatsurfacefragments,especiallyfromfloatglasssamples,canresultinx03B7;Dt,smeasurablyhigherthanfragmentsfromthebulkofthesamesource(5).Theprecisionandbiasofthistestmethodshouldbeestablishedineachlaboratorythatemploysit.Confidenceintervalsorasimilarstatisticalqualitystatementshouldbequotedalongwithanyreportedx03B7;Dtvalue.Forinstance,alaboratorymayreportthattheerrorforthemeasurement,usingareferenceopticalglassis0.00003units.Itshouldberecognizedthatthistechniquemeasurestherefractiveindexoftheglassatthematchpointtemperature,whichwillbehigherthanambienttemperature,andthus,maygivedifferentx03B7;Dtvaluesfromthoseobtainedbyothermethods,whichmeasuretherefractiveindexatroomtemperature.1.1Thistestmethodcoversaprocedureformeasuringtherefractiveindex(951;955;t)ofglasssamples,irregularlyshapedandassmallas300956;g,forthecomparisonoffragmentsofaknownsourcetorecoveredfragmentsfromaquestionedsource.1.2Thistestmethoddoesnotincludethemeasurementofopticaldispersionorthemeasurementofrefractiveindex(951;955;t)atanyotherwavelengthotherthantheSodiumDline(951;Dt).Thismethodemploysanarrowbandpassfilterat589nm,butotherfilterscouldbeemployedusingthedescribedmethodandallowingthe951;955;ttobedeterminedatotherwavelengths,therefore,alsoallowingforthedispersionvaluetobecalculated.1.3Alternativemethodsforthedeterminationof951;955;tarelistedinRefs(1-5).1.4Thisstandardtestmethoddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheusertoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.
